Since I first heard IDEO exists about a year ago, I immediately thought that I was going to work there someday. When I found out that they were looking for interns for the “Fortnight” internship program, I was in right away. Because it was so fun to write an application I thought about writing a short post about how I made one part of it.
The task was to “Create a flyer of who you are and how you like to work”.
So here is how I did it.
First of all, it took a lot of planning, and the implementation changed rapidly during two days. I did some testing and then I came up with the version I wanted to implement. From the beginning, I had a vision that it’s not going to be a plain paper. It should include something else. Then it developed further and I also decided that it needs some 3D objects to show that I like to think in many directions. First I didn’t know what the 3D object should represent but at the end it was quite obvious and I’m pretty happy with it. The flyer really shows who I am and how I like to work. There are a few tricks to show that I really put effort into the flyer, but I wanted to make sure that every trick has a meaning. So the idea was that any meaningless things would not be included. Below, there are some pictures and comments about the implementation.
I had a vision that needed wooden sticks, so I first made very thin and narrow sticks of wood with a circular saw.
Then, the during next day, I started to make the actual flyer. I had some felt, so I crafted my first name with that. My last name I wrote with a pen. The felt represents my soft side and the written text represents the fact that I can also be something else than soft if that’s needed. In the picture there is also some drafting that prepares the next text.
Next, I wrote my study information. That’s written in straight lines because I wanted it to bring forth that I’m usually very punctual.
Then I wrote down my characteristics and started to list my interests.
After that comes the first “trick”. When I was planning the flyer I thought about the things I like. One of them is definitely nature, because I have lived all of my childhood near the forest. So I thought about things that would come to my mind when thinking of a forest. Trees, green, rain, berries etc. Berries brought me memories from the past, when I used to mess up my clothes with blueberries. Then I just thought that, “yes, indeed, berries could be used as colours”. So I thought of the ways I could use that notion in my flyer. Then I came up with a vision that maybe a frozen berry could be used as a pen. I tested it right away, and yes, it worked. The first picture is about the testing and the next one is about the actual implementation.
As I said, I love nature, so I decided to brought leafs into flyer, to bring green colour and a little 3D shaping.
And the wooden sticks, too. Actually, I used wooden sticks because the wood has been a building material that I have always liked to work with the most.
I glued the sticks to the backside of the flyer.
The front side looked like this.
After gluing the sticks, I used a “dremel” to make some holes to the paper. It wasn’t an easy task because the wood was very fragile and I wanted the holes to be in certain places. Maybe you can figure out a pattern
Then I finished the flyer with a 3D object like I had planned.
Yes, a swing! Why? Well, because even though I have to work hard I want to have a little fun sometimes. I also still feel like a little boy. And there is one more thing. The word swing actually reminds me about the dance I love to dance, West Coast Swing. I also put the word ‘nature’ to the paper. The word is written by using birch leafs. I wanted to use birch because it represents Finland. Therefore it’s important to Finnish people and also to me. A whole leaf and a butterfly represents the nature, but also the thing that I don’t want to be imprisoned to one layer (paper layer). I want to let my mind fly and flow over the boundaries. Here are some other pictures about the final flyer design.
Well…Actually it doesn’t end there. I didn’t put the wooden sticks to the just for fun. There was a reason, which can be seen from the following picture.
So that was the last trick. When you remove the swing and roll the paper it results in a flute with wooden decorations. The branches that hold the flute together are taken from the swing, so no new components have been brought in when the transition is done. The flute represents the fact that I have been playing the clarinet for many years, and music is a huge part of my life.
Overall, I hope that the flyer shows my passion to create new things, ability to combine different areas, and persistence to go forward and to do the actual implementation even though it is not always so simple.
Okay. Now you know how I solved one challenge that IDEO had set up. I have to say that I was pretty happy with the result.
There were also two other tasks that I had to answer, but I won’t describe them here. If you are really interested about those and the solutions I had, just send me a mail.
I hope IDEO will see my potential. However, if that doesn’t happen, I have to work out something else, so I would appreciate if you could share this post and help me to find other possible places to work at. Or if you know someone that would need an innovation/ideation guy like me, shoot me a email.
Developing new ideas and making them work is really the thing I want to do the most in the future!
